Today we toured the Eastern State Penitentiary, the first prison in the United States. The place is literally in ruins. Some places aren’t even safe enough to walk through because if you sneeze, you’ll fall through the floorboards and the plaster walls will implode.
However, we couldn’t help but notice the amazing architecture and the unexpected beauty because of and in spite of the decay.
The craziest part of the tour? A peek into Al Capone’s cell, exactly as it was during his stay.
While regular cells looked like this:

Lemme hear you say, “What the?”

your photos are so fanFREAKINGtastic that it makes me a little blog-jealous. or a LOT.
i like that al got the star treatment, btw.
nothing like being a scary mobster murderer to put the fear of god into your prison guards.
Very Dickensian. I wouldn’t mind being locked up in solitary from time to time. Sounds like a nice break.
WOW!!!!!!!
Isn’t that one of those old prisons that is suppose to be haunted? Did you meet Al Capone?
Those are awesome photos. It’s always fun to “see” history versus “reading about” it.
Very cool pictures. Prisons creep me out so bad. I think you’re all very brave for setting foot in that place. I’m sure I couldn’t do it.
Now we know where the saying “Nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there” came from. Great pictures, Tiff.
Wow! Do you think they made Al Capone wear pink underwear? I’m guessin’ no.
It looks like it was REALLY COLD. Am I right?
oddly enough the building looks a lot like many buildings i visited on a daily basis in italy. but, there were no areas we weren’t allowed to enter. building codes? non-existent!
great, I thought I was so clever because I saw this place on What Not to Wear (Stacy and Clinton surprised some girl taking a tour) and was going to suggest we check it out! Looks amazing, will you still take me sometime? When it isn’t so cold maybe?
And I agree, the photos are amazing.
Those are some SERIOIUSLY gorgeous photos. I would like to know if you will be hanging them on your wall? Because you should. I would also like to know if you saw any ghosts. And I’m serious.
Wow, just another place to add to our visit list. Sweet pictures.
Wow, these photos are amazing, you should be a photographer in your spare time!
That place is seriously creepy. Thanks for taking us all on the tour with you! You all look great!
It’s about time they started going Shabby-chic prisons!
So many cool walls. What a fun field trip. I wish I lived by you so I could tag a long.
Wowsa – those are some amazing photos!
You know how to partay
You are quite the photographer! I am impressed. I love the colors in the photograph of the rusty door. Do you know how lucky you and your kids are to live in a place so central to so many historical places? I’m jealous!
Wowza! Your photographs are stunning. I think we may differ a bit politically, however, I’m certain we would agree fully on art. You have an amazing eye, and the way you capture a moment is quite amazing. Thanks for sharing those great pics, it makes me even more anxious to visit our nations capital!
