Even though I lock my car doors every time I’m at a stoplight if there are pedestrians nearby, I tend to believe that most people are kind. Which is why it took me nearly three years of blogging to consider a question that stopped me in my tracks the other day—are there people who read this blog regularly not because they like it, but because they like to silently mock me?
While I generally assumed that non-commenters are of the friendly-but-quiet variety, I guessed that the answer to my question in at least some cases is yes. And for a day or two, I felt a little uneasy and confused.
And then I remembered that funny scene from The Office in which Dwight and Andy interview each other for Dwight’s admission to Cornell and I forgot about feeling uneasy and confused, because, come on, that was SO FUNNY!
But today I remembered that question and it begat other questions that I’m going to ask you. (And I’m changing my settings so that you may answer in complete anonymity if you desire.) I’m not so much interested in your answers as they pertain to my blog. After all, if there are haters out there, they are not the first to hate me. And thankfully they are quiet, so I’m grateful that my haters have good manners. (Bravo, haters!) But I’m just dying to know in general:
1. Are there blogs you frequent because you love to hate them?
2. Can you explain your draw to them?
3. Do you look down on people who have a toenail fungus?
That last one is a little off-topic, but I’m still curious.
OK, please discuss. I’m totally and completely interested in your answers.
Good questions . . .
1. ummm, yes. Or I should say sort of. Because hate is a strong word. My blurking confession to this practice probably sparked your paranoia. Sorry.
2. usually I’m drawn because I actually know the person in real life. And we don’t get along. Or see eye to eye. And reading their blogs alternatively confirms that we are not fit to be friends or makes me feel bad for being left out . . . now I feel like a pathetic stalker. Maybe I should have confessed all of this anonymously.
3. Not at all.
great, now I’m getting paranoid about haters reading my blog. And readers of your blog thinking I’m some snobbish meanie who reads their blog and mocks them. I’m not and I don’t. Please don’t hate me.
I think I may have left a comment or two in the past- but I am a total blurker.
But don’t worry- I am a nice person and I love your blog.
I read your blog because you are so funny and it seems like you don’t even have to try to be funny. Your blog is also uplifting. Some other blogs make me feel inadequate as a human being. So I don’t read those. Anyway- that’s why I keep coming back.
Anyway- back to the shadows…
I think I’m a blurker too…!
Yes- I do read blogs that are not my favorite for no specific reason… mainly because I’m curious about why certain people blog about the things they do. (A-hem, Dooce.)
Sometimes they embarrass me- but, it’s like a train-wreck; I can’t look away!
Nope, I don’t do that. I love your blog, and I pretty much only read blogs of people I know and love. Alyssa being the exception. But you know and love her, and we’re sisters, so I figure it’s o.k.
Nope, I don’t look down on people with toenail fungus, either. In fact, I look UP to most people who are 10 years old or older! But, then, I’m pretty short.
1.I am WAY too busy to read as many blogs as I would like and sometimes get too busy to comment (and sometimes just feel too much pressure to say something clever). Wouldn’t bother reading people’s blogs if I didn’t love them…
2. I like blogs that I can steal crafting/parenting/cooking/cleaning/witty remarks from.
3. Ewwww.
Most of the blogs I read are from friends, and I read them to keep up with or in touch with those friends. I love knowing what’s going on in their lives! There are a few, like the Writers Almanac and sometimes Seriously so Blessed and Ricky Gervais that I read for the entertainment. I don’t read any that I don’t like.
I would at least question a person who lives with toenail fungus. That stuff should be fairly easy to get rid of, so why not get rid of it? I’d have to wonder.
I don’t read blogs that I hate. I do blog stalk (I guess I would now be called a “blurker”? I am so behind the times)a few different blogs. Usually I feel wierd commenting on someone’s blog that I don’t know. Yet I feel totally comfortable reading it.
As for toenail fungus….My mother-in-law has this and I still love her. By the by, Angie, it is much harder to get rid of than you would think. She has started taking a new pill that is suppose to help but it is very expensive. Oh the plight of those with toenail fungus!
I only read the blogs of those I love and although I don’t comment often because I am worried about becoming addicted and wasting my entire day not just a big chunk of it, you must know I read every post and laugh (or cry depending on your intent) and count myself lucky to know you and Ryan!
Toenail fungus scares me but I try not to judge!
1) Nope. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the blogs I earnestly love!
Kidding.
2) n/a
3) Can I have another question?
I don’t look at blogs of people I hate. My ex-husband’s wife reads my blog, but thankfully she has never left a comment. She is, however, insane, so it makes me think twice about what I write. Ya wanna know how insane she is? She threw my coat away last weekend when my daughter wore it to their house. Yeah. That’s the kind of crazy that reads my blog. Sheesh!
I don’t read blogs that I dislike or mock because I don’t have the time.
Toenail fungus… good luck with that.
i, too, barely have time to read the blogs i enjoy.
and, my mom had a toenail fungus which was really hard to get rid of. i mostly looked up to her (if i looked down, i would have to see the creepy nail. ewww)
1. I look(key word look) at too many. I wouldn’t use the word hate, maybe just not my favorite person.
2. It’s all about curiosity. (sp?)
3. Love a good foot fungus!
1. I read blogs I like. Sometimes I’ll check out a suggestion from a friend, but other than that, I’ve found what I like. Besides, I waste enough time on the internet and reading blogs I don’t like would waste even more time and then I’d actually feel “bad” for wasting time. Oh great, now I made it sound like I think reading blogs is a waste of time, that’s not what I meant.
2. I’d like to proudly state this is the first blog I ever read. I was apart of your WBWG in UT, such good times, and I remember when you “unveiled” it. Ha ha ha. I read my friends blogs and then sometimes I read blogs that they read just to see if I know that person. Since I’m terrible at keeping in touch with people and I HATE talking on the phone (strange, I know, but I don’t know why) reading blogs is the best way to know what my friends/family are up to. Well, that and Facebook.
3. Nope. I willingly married a guy with toenail fungus. We lived 6 years with it. I include myself in that equation, kind of like how pregnant couples will say “We’re pregnant” as a statement of “we’re in this together”, or “I helped her get this way”, however I had NOTHING to do with the acquisition of his fungus, but I CELEBRATED with him when it finally succumbed to medicine. We are now a toenail fungus free family. We are also a toenail fungus safety house. If you know of anyone who has unfairly been persecuted and needs a “safe place” to kick up their feet for a while, we are that “safe place”.
i don’t read blogs of people i hate. in fact, there are a couple of blogs that i dropped recently because they were so freakin’ annoying and i couldn’t handle it.
but i can guarantee, GUARANTEE that there are some people out there who feel the same way about me and read just to be bugged by me. i’ve received a few hater comments. but they only fuel me a little more–kind of like if i keep writing, it’s my big “screw you, you big fat JERK!” to them. a tad bit vindictive? yes.
but when it comes to all things tiffany? TOTAL LOVE AND DEVOTION.
1. When I first began reading blogs there were a few blogs that I read of people that I do not care for. (polite way of saying hate)I really only spend the time reading blogs that uplift me or help me in my life somehow. Although there are 2 blogs that I read when I am feeling a bit masochistic.
2. It’s sort of the way I can’t leave a hangnail alone. It hurts so good. And I enjoy making up comments that I would never in a million years leave.
Too easy to trace.
3. My love for you is eternal. Fungus or not. Besides. Who really can say “there’s a fun-gus among-us” with absolute truth.
good questions.
I have ditched the people I no like. I have time for it.
But I do like a good toenail fungus. I am stickin to you like glue.
1. No, I can barely keep up with the blogs that I love to read because they are funny and clever and good. Like yours.
3. Absolutely. That’s disgusting.
I love your blog, which is why I read it. You are funny, not just funny, but so funny – on a level that I couldn’t even copy if I tried (but if I do try to copy you, I hope that is okay too)
I only read one blog of a person that used to be a friend and now isn’t…she is funny too, but I really only read it because I’m curious, and if she knew that I was reading her blog (and she might because she has sitemeter) I would only be slightly embarrassed, but not enough so to stop. In some twisted-crazy way, I hope that she reads my blog too, so I can feel justified (but I don’t think she does)
Toe nail fungus is fine if you just keep it to yourself and don’t go spreading it around to my cute pink & white healthy nails!
I heart your blog.
1. shamefully, yes. Yours does NOT fall into that category.
2. It’s like a oogling a train wreck, neglecting to sound the booger alarm,or watching someone walk out of the restroom with their skirt tucked in their drawers. Not pretty, not right, but usually interesting or entertaining.
3.only if they willingly and recklessly rub their comminicable piggies in public showers or on my fuzzy bath mat. Otherwise, no harm, no foul.
Oh H*&%! I do too know how to spell commUnicable. And yes, I’ve relinquished my 6th grade spelling bee crown.
