As declared by my sister’s friend, Corrie, tomorrow is National Friend Day—twenty-four hours dedicated to appreciating the people who are nice to you out of no familial obligation. At least that’s how I define it. Except that you can still be friends with your family members. So, it’s pretty much anybody you like, related or not. Wow, this is getting muddy.
So if tomorrow is Friend Day, that makes today Friend Day Eve, the day where we plan out how we will celebrate Friend Day. (Some people call this Procrastinator’s Day.) And I’m wondering (especially since I love stealing ideas), how do you plan to celebrate? Will you send e-mails? Will you make phone calls? A meet-me-for-luncheon or a surprise plate of cookies? A silly e-card or a hand-written note? Dinner at your old hang-out or a mix-CD of your favorite sing-along tunes?
On a more theoretical level, have you ever taken a moment to think about your friendships? What makes them work? I’ve been thinking about this a lot, actually, and I’m realizing that I don’t think I’m a very good friend. I’m not always right there. I’m not always very considerate and nurturing. I’m often sporadic. I can be mildly judgmental. I’m going to work on these, so that next year when Friend Day rolls around, I won’t be feeling like I’d be better off celebrating Endearing Casual Acquaintance Day instead.
Please tell me your ideas and don’t forget to leave out a plate of cookies for Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe tonight!
From all of the comments on your blog, I think people are way excited about friend day
It may take a while for people to catch on, but I’m in! I plan on sending e-cards and making cookies that I will hand deliver. Even if I’m the only one east of the Mississippi who celebrates tomorrow, I know I’ll feel good about this. I want to hear all about what you do!
What is an e-card? I am so not computer friendly. ( Mabey I should hang out with my computer tomorrow, and we could become friends, being national friend day and all.) I love the idea of friend day. This gives me incentive to say boo to those friends I haven’t seen, or talked to in awhile. Thanks for the idea!
An e-card is an electronic greeting card. They usually have music or a game of some sort. I send free e-cards from http://www.hallmark.com (click on ecard and make sure you choose the free ones), they have tons to choose from for any occasion. You can even sit down and send a bunch and then choose the date you want it sent, so it looks like you remembered all sorts of birthdays, anniversaries etc, but really, hallmark did. Check it out!
Happy Friend Day!!!!!
Shoot, that is pretty much the extent of my celebration so far. I will keep thinking and hopefully come up with something later that doesn’t involve more meetings at work.
Darn. I missed it.
