While Driving at Minus Seven Degrees

January 22nd, 2007

“I wonder if those cows are cold.”

“I don’t know. I guess it’s hard to tell.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, every time the farmer asks them if they’re cold, they just say, ‘Mmoooo!’ And so far, nobobdy really knows what that means.”

I think about that a lot in the winter when I see cows or horses especially because they are always just standing around. Cherie and I were talking about that today. They have 2 cats who prefer to be outside and don’t like it when Dave brings them into their store room on especially cold nights. I wonder how many homeless people died, or will yet die this winter. I’m really thankful for my warm bed at night.

this morning it was 20 something degrees in NYC when I left my apartment which means it was possibly in the single digits with the wind chill at my apartment near the Hudson River so I opted to ride the heated shuttle three blocks rather than walk (I walk the remaining mile to work but it isn’t as cold as near the water). On the shuttle I had to move away from the window because the heater made it too hot to sit there all bundled up in my long wool coat with fur trim. As we rounded the corner I was looking out the window and saw a homeless man huddled under rags and garbage with a tarp strewn above him tacked to the temporary wall guarding an empty lot and a shopping cart. He was hunched over writing something and I wondered if he knew what day it is and what his journal was about. Then I was struck by how many luxuries I take for granted – especially the three block shuttle ride because the wind is too sharp to walk.

my dad’s goat died. it may have been the cold weather. but he outlived his brother by two years, so we’re not sure. all of his chickens and geese have survived and so have the stray barn cats. i know paco my indoor cat loves to keep cozy sitting on the heater vent. i am so grateful for our trusty furnace.
