Tool Day

February 28th, 2006

Today was “Tool Day” at Christian’s elementary school, another version of Career Day.  He heard from “a karate guy”, an “electro-mechanico”, and one other interesting speaker.  He called me as soon as he got picked up from school:

“Um, Mom, have you ever heard of a business called ‘Pampered Chef’?”

“Yeah.”

“Lochlan’s mom works for Pampered Chef.”

“Cool.  Did she come and talk to you today?”

“Yeah.  Um, so, are you gonna call her?”

“What do you mean?”

“She said to call her.”

“For what?”

“She said she can teach you how to have fun in the kitchen.”

“Uhhhhh….”

“And she gave us a coupon, but we have to place our order before March thirty-first.”

WHAT???? Not having any children I don’t know a whole lot about career day/tool day etiquette but my guess is there is probably a rule about not USING children to sell your MLM (multi-level marketing or as I like to call them ponzi scheme) wares. The next thing you know your child will be begging for Noni juice and you will have a glimpse into how that monstrous Tahitian Noni building in Utah County was constructed. Of course, I did have a 9th grade biology teacher who made us sell Amway bubble gum to raise money for a Biosphere 2000 (which I never saw, but I didn’t sell a lot of gum, not even to myself – it was gross).

My son had a career/hobby day once last year (3rd grade). Since his teacher was ‘old school’ I had him ask if I could teach the children how to reload ammunition.

    To my surprise, she agreed.

I explained ballistics to the children and how cartridges work and how guns work and how dangerous weapons are. We even went over all of the safety rules and what to do if you ever happen upon a gun-type stuff.

    It was neat.
